Not only will a used car be new to you, it will actually be a great way to spend your money, instead of simply throwing it away like you would with a new car. New cars can lose up to 50% of their value immediately after you drive it off the lot, but used cars have taken much of that depreciation already and will cost you less. Here are three great used cars, depending on your budget and your needs.
1. Volkswagen Golf. For those out there who want something that is reliable, safe, economical and fast, there is the VW Golf. There are many different types of Golfs to choose from depending on what you are planning to do with it. For those who want better gas mileage, there is a diesel option, while others looking for performance can go for the VR6 model. In between there is a 1.8 or 2.0 turbo option as well and you can even get a normally aspirated motor as well. There are also plenty of VW parts on the market for those looking to do some aftermarket modifications like an HID kit or custom performance parts there is no shortage of information about these cars on the Internet. The VW Golf is a safe, easy choice for anyone.
2. For those looking to step away from something a little boxy, there is the Subaru Impreza to look at. This car is a top safety pick and also comes in a variety of shapes and different engine choices. For the safety conscious parent who needs to haul stuff, there is always the Impreza wagon. For those looking to haul that stuff a little faster, you can upgrade to the WRX wagon. Also available is the top level STi, featuring a 2.5 liter, turbocharged engine that produces 300 horsepower. Consumers should be wary of WRXs and STis that have been modified, as the engine has probably been put under more strain than some others. However, these Japanese cars have proven to be reliable and with all wheel drive as standard, they are perfect for any climate.
3. For those out there looking to get a sporty car that is reliable, quick and mid-engined, there is the Toyota MR2. There are three variations of the MR2 that were made and the most stylish, and powerful, was the second generation version, the SW20. This version featured either a 2.2 liter, naturally aspirated engine or a 2.0 liter, turbocharged engine producing 200 horsepower. Besides the styling and the performance, this car is actually usable as it includes a trunk that can fit two sets of golf clubs and still has room for some small bags. This car is a practical, usable little sports car that looks great, is fun to drive and is cheap to buy.

Help answer the question about japanese car modification
I want an old car to do track days in?Its a road course and I don't want to spend a whole lot of money. I prefer japanese cars, but it can be european. No american, they just don't handle that well. Rear wheel drive if possible but not a necessity. If anyone has any suggestions of something that will be fairly reliable with good performance with some modification, and a reasonable price it would be appreciated?
